Round the World with Revive Active!

We are delighted to announce that Revive Active will be supporting Enda O’Coineen in his solo round-the-world yacht race beginning Sunday November 6th

The Vendee Globe solo round-the-world race takes place every 4 years.  It is the most challenging solo ocean race in the world and Galwayman Enda O’Coineen is the first Irish man to take on the challenge.

Enda O’Coineen has had a successful business career, you may recognise him from The Secret Millionaire TV show amongst other things. He is also one of the creators of Ireland’s famous sailing magazine, Afloat. In his youth, he crossed the Atlantic on an inflatable boat, just to prove to his that it could be done. Among a host of other facets to this unusual character, we can add that Enda O’Coineen was both the founder of the Atlantic Youth Trust, an educational programme taking hundreds of youngsters each year on board classic yachts, and President of the International Federation of Irish Pubs.

The event was founded by French sailor Philippe Jeantot, following on from his two wins in the BOC Challenge (the solo round the world race with stopovers and now the VELUX 5 Oceans Race). Disappointed with the format of the BOC Challenge he came up with the idea of a new solo round the world race, but this time a non-stop race. The Globe Challenge was born, and a few editions later this became the Vendée Globe. On 26th November 1989, thirteen sailors set off in this first edition, which would last more than three months. Only seven made it back to les Sables d’Olonne.

Since then, the first seven editions of what the public refers to as the Everest of the seas, have enabled 138 sailors to line up at the start of the Vendée Globe, while only 71 have managed to cross the finishing line. This figure alone expresses the huge difficulty of this global event, where sailors face icy cold conditions, mountainous waves and heavy skies in the Southern Ocean. The Vendée Globe is above all a voyage to the ends of the sea and deep down into each sailor’s soul. It has been won by some of the greatest names in sailing: Titouan Lamazou of Morocoo, Alain Gautier, Christophe Auguin, Vincent Riou and François Gabart, all of whom are French. Only one sailor has won it twice: Frenchman Michel Desjoyeaux, in 2001 and 2009. The race record is held by François Gabart with a time of 78 days.

This year the eighth Vendée Globe will set sail from les Sables d’Olonne on Sunday 6th November 2016. Enda will depart from Les Sables d’Olonne on France’s Atlantic coast and hopes to complete the non-stop 29,000-nautical-mile race in less than 100 days. Enda O'Coineen Revive Active

In 2015, Enda O’Coineen amazed everyone, when he made it to the podium of the St Barth-Port La Forêt transatlantic race on an IMOCA (he finished third). It is clear that he is an excellent sailor and is far from being unknown in the world of ocean racing. While the 61-year old freely admits that he’s unlikely to be in the leading group of 29 sailors on his 10-year-old boat, but completing the race itself will be a massive accomplishment.

He stated: ‘sure I want to go quick but for me to finish would mean fulfilling a lifelong ambition to complete a non–stop lap of our planet. The fact that I would be the first Irish person to do it would make it all the more special. Representing Ireland and promoting ocean and adventure in Ireland is an honour’.

Revive Active Products are delighted to be supporting Enda in his adventure and wish him the very best of luck.  Revive Active will be keeping a close eye on Enda’s progress and will keep our Facebook and Twitter followers updated on his adventure.
