Which form of folic acid is best for women of child bearing age?

Posted by Marketing Admin on

Folic acid has received a lot of attention, particularly for the critical role it plays during pregnancy.

In fact, women of child bearing age are recommended by healthcare professionals to take a folic acid supplement.

In this blog post, we take a look at the role of folic acid in the body, why it is so important, and the form of folic acid contained in our Revive Active Super Supplement.

What is folic acid?

The terms folate and folic acid are often used interchangeably.

Folate is one of the B vitamins, known as B-9, and is found naturally in foods such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, kidney beans, chickpeas and in a number of breakfast cereals where it has been added by the manufacturer.

Folic acid is the man-made equivalent of folate. It is made in a laboratory and can be found in supplements and sometimes in fortified foods.

When folic acid reaches the digestive system it is converted into the biologically active form known as MTHF folate. This is the type of folate often found in pre-natal supplements.

Why is folate important?

Folate plays an important role in the production of our DNA.

Not only does it help make red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout the body and help prevent anaemia and is involved in cell division.

Folate is also critical during pregnancy, where it can help prevent the potential for preterm delivery, heart disorders, cleft palate and neural tube defects that lead to conditions such as spina bifida.

The HSE recommends that women of child bearing age who could become pregnant in the next twelve months should take a 400-microgram folic acid supplement each day, in addition to a healthy diet.

The form of folic acid used in Revive Active

As part of Revive Active’s commitment to its customers, we only ever use high quality ingredients.

A shining example of our commitment is the inclusion of our MTHF grade of folic acid.

We could have chosen to use a cheaper, unstructured form of folic acid in our formula, but our research found it to be particularly unstable, leading to the degradation of the MTHF over a period of three to six months.

That is why we instead chose the more stable – and more expensive – crystalline form to ensure it delivers the optimum benefit to our customers.
